52 Ancestors #12: Joseph Charles Birch (Dover, Kent) (1820-1906)

Joseph Charles Birch is the 4xGreat Grandfather of my children. This post is part of the 52 ancestors challenge blogposts.

Joseph Charles Birch was born in 1820 in Dover, Kent. His parents were Joseph and Elizabeth Birch.

In 1855 he married Mary Ann Venner. The couple went on to have 7 children - Alice, Joseph, William, Charles, Rose, Ellen and one other that I've not identified yet!

On the 1861 census Joseph is described as a licensed victualler. He was the proprietor of the Princess Alice Inn until 1863 when he moved to the Flying Horse Pub in King Street, Dover.

"Joseph C Birch," Dover Express (Dover, Kent), electronic newspaper, archived, (http://www.findmypast.co.uk: accessed 25 March 2014), p. 1, col. 4, para. 1.

Unfortunately the Flying Horse no longer exists. You can find out more about the pub at the Dover archives website where I found this picture.

In 1871 Joseph had to file for bankruptcy and the pub is mentioned in these documents.

"Joseph C Birch Creditors Request," 31March 1871 Dover Express (Dover, Kent), electronic newspaper, archived, (http://www.findmypast.co.uk: accessed 25 March 2014), p. 1, col. 5, para. 1.

By 1891 Joseph's career has taken another turn and he's now an assistant curator at a museum and by 1901 he is finally retired at the grand age of 81!

Joseph died in 1906 and is buried in Dover.
